Today we share with you a short interview with our Transparency Action Group (TAG) active in Kasempa, on the risks of environmental corruption in Kasempa district and what the TAG is doing to fight it!
What are the main environmental issues in your district?
The biggest environmental challenge we see in Kasempa is the gap in information that our communities have. The majority of the people don’t understand what environmental challenges are and how to address them.
What are the main issues of environmental corruption?
Environmental corruption is there. When there are human beings, you expect corruption to take place. These might include people [or companies] who pollute the environment and want to avoid punishment [through corruption], they will induce those who would carry action to ensure that they are not punished.
What has been your involvement in this field?
We have got information on how carbon finance operates, as well as on community forest management groups, those who look after community forests. As a TAG, we bridge the gap between those who want to invest in carbon finance and [the communities, by reinforcing] the governance and the decentralization of the organisations overseeing those particular forests.
